Health PromotionPeak Health Taranaki
A jointly funded (SPARC and Peak Health Taranaki) project which funds a full time co-ordinator who facilitates a range of projects and education designed at instilling habits of physical activity and healthy eating in the under 5’s. This project continues to progress well and to receive a positive response from early childhood organisations and parents/caregivers of under fives.

Healthy Homes is a service provided by Better Homes to insulate houses and provides a range of other energy efficient tools to improve the overall health of your home. Peak Health Taranaki is part of the steering group Healthy Homes in New Plymouth that has been building on the Better Homes concept that was aimed at reducing the number of damp, drafty cold houses in Waitara. The Healthy Homes project is about building on the success of Better Homes and linking in other housing, health and public service providers to make a positive difference to people’s quality of life and their ability to play an active and effective role in our community. The Active Families programme is an extension of the Green Prescription (GRx) programme focusing on the whole families’ physical activity level and nutritional habits, acknowledging that if you only change the behaviour of one family member it is unlikely any changes will last for long. The objective of the programme is to have 15 families involved, with a focus on children. To help these families and individuals set goals around physical activity and nutrition and to achieve them; to increase the families’ physical activity level and consumption of fruit, vegetables, milk, breads and cereals. Taranaki has a higher rate of childhood poisonings than the national rate. Kidsafe Taranaki Trust found that a large percentage of unintentional poisonings of children were from paracetamol poisonings. Peak Health Taranaki in partnership with Kidsafe Taranaki Trust will be running this project from 2007 – 2010.
Fit Kids is an intensive 10 week school based healthy lifestyle programme. PTPHO runs this programme in Manukorihi Intermediate, as this is a low decile / high need school in Taranaki. The overall goal of this project is to improve intermediate school children’s health through physical activity, nutrition and supportive environments. |
